This position serves as member of senior management. As such, the incumbent provides vision, policy, strategy and direction setting on behalf of the Foundation. The organization will depend on this person's enterprise and industry view. The positon is responsible for driving financial organizational goals for the Foundation.
POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
The Senior Director position is responsible for the overall establishment, supervision, and management of the financial operations of the Rheumatology Research Foundation (Foundation). The Senior Director is expected to provide vision, policy, strategy and direction setting in the areas of budgeting, audit, treasury, investments and endowments, financial analysis, reporting and forecasting, strategic planning, project management, policy making and contracts.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary responsibility of the Senior Director, Finance includes accounting, budget planning and control, cash and investment management, treasury, audit, and tax compliance functions. The Senior Director, Finance directs all finance-related strategies, initiatives and activities for organization-wide financial accounting and reporting.
Accounting and Financial Reporting
Responsible for directing the organization's overall financial policies and procedures
Overseeing all treasury, accounting, budget, tax and audit activities for the organization
Tracking, reporting on and managing the overall financial performance of the organization
Ensuring the timely completion and submission of financial and statistical reporting for management and regulatory agencies
Informing and advising senior management on the organization's financial condition
Designs and coordinates a wide variety of accounting and statistical data and reports
Manage the general ledger and all related accounts with proper documentation and records of all company transactions; monitors entries to the general and subsidiary ledgers to assure accuracy and compliance with the company's and established accounting principles; control all changes to chart of accounts
Review monthly and year-end closing of the general ledger
Prepare required reports as directed by the VP, Operations and Finance and respond to inquiries as necessary.
Present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the Foundation’s financial status
Provide monthly financial reports to Executive Director on income and expenses (actual vs. budgeted), and quarterly reports on investments
Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working closely with Foundation staff
Develop and implement initiatives to improve accounting procedures and ensure that results are attained and quality standards are met
Stay current with developments, practice trends, and promulgations in the accounting profession; monitor accounting systems and recommend new or revised policies and procedures
Working with senior staff in setting annual financial goals and targets for organization
Manage annual budget process including software systems training and maintenance; supervise preparation of department-specific and organization-wide budgets; provide guidance to the Executive Director for review of final budget and related communication for Committee on Finance and Board of Directors’ approvalAudit and Tax
Assist tax accountants with the preparation of the Foundation’s annual tax return (IRS Form 990)
Coordinate all audit activity for the Foundation including review of schedules, documentation, and information to be used in the year-end audit processInvestment/Endowment/Treasury
Administer and monitor ACR and Foundation investment portfolios, including oversight of outside investment manager performance; coordinating with investment consultant to ensure that investments comply with the Board's investment policies; ensuring proper documentation and accounting for investment/endowment portfolios
Administer banking arrangements and loan agreements, and lines of credit and maintain relationships with financial institutions for ACR and the FoundationGeneral
Prepare reports, slides and talking points on behalf of the Foundation Treasurer for presentation at the Committee on Finance and Foundation Board of Directors meetings
Advise Foundation staff on matters related to planned giving, charitable gift annuities and trusts
Review and retain documentation of memoranda and contracts related to donations
Keep abreast of charity rating criteria (i.e., Charity Navigator and Guidestar); Ensure timely posting of financial information to the Foundation website
Review and approve all finance-related content prior to publication in Foundation collateral
Responsible for ensuring the completion of matters related to regulatory compliance including state annual reports, registration as a charity, etc.QUALIFICATIONS:
CPA required; business-related advanced degree and a minimum of eight years’ experience preferred
Requires advanced knowledge and experience in a specialized area of finance or broad general financial knowledge
Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit finance and accounting concepts, practices, and procedures; experience with Fund Accounting preferred
Experience with accounting and spreadsheet applications; knowledge of computerized accounting systems (including Dynamics SL, Raisers Edge/Blackbaud, Microsoft, CRM) preferred
General knowledge of endowments, investment vehicles and applicable tax laws
Ability to perform complex management tasks within the functional area with minimal supervision, and direct the work of others in this area
Extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with others in a professional manner
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
