The California Society of Certified Public Accountants (CalCPA) will have an opening for the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for our Society and for our wholly-owned academic provider, the CalCPA Education Foundation and the CalCPA Institute. We are the largest state society and a national leader in the CPA profession.
WHO WE ARE:
CalCPA Society is comprised of 45,000 members, 14 Chapters, and 24 State Committees.
Members come from CPA firms large and small, from all industries, and from academia.
CalCPA is run by a highly professional management team and staff of about 80 people.
Approximately 2,000 members volunteer time to assist in making CalCPA the premiere organization it is.
SIZE AND SCOPE:
Our annual budget is approximately $25 million, which includes approximately $300,000 in annual student scholarships.
We hold approximately 200 events and trainings per month for our members.
In aggregate, our members also contribute over 1.2 million hours of service back to local communities throughout California.
Our assets are nearly $50 million and include ownership of the building that is home to our new headquarters.
Founded in 1909, CalCPA is the largest State Society of CPAs in the U.S. and is still growing!
The organization’s headquarters are in Burlingame, with satellite offices in Sacramento and Glendale.
CalCPA’s mission is to increase the value and promote the integrity of the CPA profession, contribute to the success of our members, and strengthen client, employer, public and government trust in CalCPA member advice, work products, services and opinions. CalCPA Education Foundation’s mission is to deliver quality education and build knowledge to foster excellence and advance individuals and the profession through innovation and in partnership with the CPA profession.
In partnership with the Board of Directors (Board), the CEO is responsible for the success of CalCPA. Together, the Board and CEO ensure CalCPA’s value to the members, the accomplishment of CalCPA’s mission and vision, and the accountability of CalCPA to its diverse constituents.
The Board delegates responsibility for management and day-to-day operations to the CEO, and s/he has the authority to carry out these responsibilities, in accordance with the direction and policies established by the Board.

QUALIFICATIONS OF IDEAL CANDIDATE
A demonstrated track record of effective, collegial, cooperative, and inspiring leadership
Extensive and demonstrated hands-on management experience; specifically, managing larger organizations and tactical level plans efficiently and managing the performance of the executive team
Board relations. A clear understanding of the respective roles of the Board and management; in particular, the difference between governance and management, and the role of boards in setting or co-creating strategy
Technology skills. High comfort level with current and trending technology, and implications to members and users. Ability to come up with concepts and implement in a rapidly changing business environment
Communication skills. Ability to connect with a diverse group of stakeholders and build long-lasting relationships. Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with employees, members, and stakeholders of all backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to project and promote the mission of CalCPA. Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas
Change Management. Enthusiasm for problem-solving. Manages change rapidly using a transparent, creative approach that boosts staff morale and enhances programs, products and services. Comfortable taking risks
Strategic and Visionary. An innovative approach to the management of resources and opportunities. Able to convey the vision and strategy to staff; help them understand changes and align their activities with those changes
Cultural and Generational Awareness: Understands and embraces the importance of diversity and generational issues and how they must continue to be actively incorporated into the culture and strategies of CalCPA
REQUIREMENTS OF IDEAL CANDIDATE
Extensive work experience in a senior management position in a similar sized trade association, nonprofit, or academic organization.
Bachelor’s Degree is required. Advanced degrees are preferred.
Ability to travel throughout CA and U.S. as required
