NAHB is seeking a Field Specialist to support affiliated home building associations (HBAs). The Field Specialist, Disaster Relief will manage the Federation’s disaster relief efforts by providing functional expertise and training to local and state HBAs to help their associations, members and communities prepare for and recover from a natural disaster. The Field Specialist will represent the national association and must be able to generally maintain a moderate to heavy travel schedule.
General Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and maintain contacts with governmental stakeholders, disaster preparedness and relief experts, government Agency/Administration staff, and industry experts both within and outside the Federation.
Develop and maintain a repository of best practices for disaster preparedness and recovery.
Serve as NAHB’s thought leader as needed with local level government and other agencies and organizations involved in disaster.
Serve as key representative of NAHB in the community, interfacing with local officials and developing plans with community leaders.
Regularly coordinate/communicate with other NAHB staff in relevant fields (e.g., codes and regulatory).
May support local preparation, response and recovery activities to include physical deployment to impacted communities.
Analyze opportunities for improved program service and recommends for implementation.
Staff, promote and engages the Home Building Industry Disaster Relief Fund and the (proposed) NAHB Disaster Recovery Grant Program for Affiliated Associations.
Connects HBA staff and members to NAHB staff for key matters, conducts on-site programs for HBA staff and leadership aimed at strengthening the local association, and travels to local HBAs as requested to provide specialty programs to address specific HBA’s needs.
Skills and Experience
Excellent relationship building and customer service skills to understand customer needs and develop a partnership of mutual respect and trust. Uncover and assist with unstated needs and connect them with NAHB staff and resources as needed.
Superior written and interpersonal communication skills with a familiarity and comfort in public speaking. Speaks and writes clearly, concisely, and persuasively and listens actively to customers.
Ability to synthesize a large amount of information given the complexity of issues and the diversity of resources offered throughout the organization.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines with consistent follow-through.
Independent, disciplined and self-motivated with availability to travel extensively (generally expected to be on the road at least 50%-75% of the year including overnights and occasional weekends).
Proficient with technology including an understanding of app and social media integration in a professional environment, Microsoft Office, CRM and various means of mobile connectivity.
Three to five years of leadership experience in association management, chapter relations or related areas.
Demonstrated experience coordinating multiple stakeholders, including NGO, local municipalities and state/federal agencies, preferably in a disaster response environment; or
Demonstrated experience supporting HBAs, the residential construction, or similar industry during times of natural disaster; including oversite of multi-faceted relief efforts.
