Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions
Position Announcement – November 2019
Location: Work from Home Office in the United States
The Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions (the “Alliance”) welcomes applications for the position of Executive Director, available immediately.
About the Alliance
The Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions serves as a strategic catalyst for the sustainable seafood sector by connecting over 40 leading conservation groups from North America, South America, Europe, Japan, and beyond. We work with leading businesses throughout the supply chain, from fishers and fish farmers, to importers, suppliers, retailers and foodservice companies. Guided by the Alliance Board, we work together to tackle challenges that are too big for any one organization or business to solve alone. By sharing expertise and co-developing tools, we help businesses advance ambitious sustainable seafood commitments and assist fisheries and aquaculture farms to make improvements. The Conservation Alliance works towards transformational change by:
Aligning our work. The Alliance facilitates alignment around priority elements within our Theory of Change to ensure that the individual efforts of our organizations add up to the greatest possible impact. We set ambitious targets and hold ourselves accountable with shared measurement approaches to track our progress and improve our work.
Developing and fostering initiatives and products to accelerate progress. Designed to increase efficiency, remove barriers, and accelerate impact across the sector, these initiatives and products can be implemented by diverse partners.
Serving as a global hub of support. We serve as a center for information-sharing, networking, and relationship-building so that all players working to improve seafood supply chains can connect, strengthen our capacity, and effectively leverage our individual and shared tools, approaches, and experience.
After an extensive process led by the Alliance Board, the Conservation Alliance now has a new strategic plan that lays out an ambitious plan, and corresponding strategies, that will enable the Alliance to catalyze collaboration and measurable progress in global fisheries, aquaculture, and production of seafood.
The Executive Director will lead the Alliance community in the execution of this new strategy. We seek an entrepreneurial, outcomes-driven, and well-connected Executive Director with a track record of collaborative experience in the environmental and/or social responsibility sectors. S/he will have a strong relationship with the Alliance Board, consulting them as trusted advisors on strategy implementation and refinement, and collaborating with them to cultivate and manage relationships, communicate with funders, monitor and evaluate impact, and approve budgets. The successful candidate will be able to navigate tough conversations, build enthusiasm and momentum, set priorities, make strategic decisions, and champion the Alliance both internally and externally.
Key roles include:
Implementer: Turning the strategic plan into reality by working closely with the Alliance Board, staff and participating organizations to identify partners, develop work plans and draft budgets and cultivate funding prospects that will allow the Alliance to achieve the outcomes defined in the strategic plan
Community Builder: Strengthening member engagement through effective recruitment, aligning member strengths with Alliance priorities, and fostering ties between organizations to ensure that all are engaged in Alliance activities and contributing to collective impact
Visionary: Ensuring that the Alliance stays on the leading edge of the field and fosters opportunities for the Alliance and its members to lead innovative and collaborative efforts
Ambassador: Acting as a spokesperson for the Alliance at key events, cultivating a strong media presence, and regularly communicating Alliance goals and objectives to diverse audiences
Producer: Serving as the chief fundraiser for the Alliance, through the development and implementation of a bold plan that includes both managing existing relationships and cultivating new ones
Financial Director: Overseeing the budget, finances and administration of the Alliance. Working in partnership with the fiscal sponsor’s finance and grants management team to manage the overall budget, finances and administration of the Alliance, including proposal development, management and reporting, contracting, and cash flow management.
Mentor: Fostering and supporting a high-performing remote Alliance team (currently 3 FTE), including coaching, mentoring and overseeing their individual and team-based work streams while also providing ongoing opportunities for individual and team skill-building and professional development
The Ideal Candidate:
Is a passionate advocate for environmental sustainability and social responsibility
Has at least 8 years of experience in a leadership role with a record of success in partnership development
Has a strong track record of fostering collaborations and supporting the incubation of ideas and strategies across organizations/companies.
Has demonstrated success securing and managing revenue from foundations and other major donors.
Will be comfortable both in leading and working alongside others, when necessary.
Has an entrepreneurial spirit and will be “at home” in a lean start-up environment, yet comfortable navigating within larger institutional structures and hierarchy.
Has the demonstrated ability to work effectively with, and quickly gain the respect and support of, the full complement of stakeholders in the sustainable seafood movement
Is a strategic thinker with excellent planning, analytical, and management skills
Has strong interpersonal and communication skills, and as a spokesperson is comfortable with diplomacy and member-supported advocacy.
Will be able to travel domestically and internationally
