INFORMS (The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to promoting best practices, advancement, and impact of operations research and analytics. The mission of INFORMS is to promote greater public awareness, interest, and understanding about the value of operations research and analytics. To support this mission, INFORMS provides a variety of programs and services that support lifelong learning and networking. Services include:
Scholarly Journals –16 highly cited, peer-reviewed publications that address the full spectrum of the operations research and analytics fields. A subset of the journals focus on the theoretical foundations of operations research and analytics. Other journals report on successful, high-impact applications. And another set of journals are focused on the utilization of the methodology of operations research and analytics to a functional field, including transportation, marketing, operations and information technology.
Magazine – INFORMS publishes bi-monthly print and digital magazines that provide members with relevant news and industry updates through a series of case studies, feature articles, news stories and more. These publications include OR/MS Today, Analytics, and OR/MS Tomorrow.
Conferences – INFORMS largest gathering is the Annual Conference with more than 7,000 members, students, academics, and industry leaders connecting to share ideas, and explore best practices. The INFORMS Business Analytics Conference features presentations by industry and academic leaders on real-world applications of analytic solutions. Specialty conferences have addressed timely topics such as security, health care and big data.
Professional Development – INFORMS provides many opportunities to support career-long growth while also helping organizations identify and retain operations research and analytics talent. Professional development opportunities include Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) and Associate Certified Analytics Professional (aCAP), Continuing Education, Career Fairs and Online Career Center, and Mentoring.
Networking – With membership across the globe, INFORMS Connect is a vibrant platform that connects members no matter where they live and work. This virtual platform facilitates continuous discussion and collaboration.
Community Building and Engagement – Community building and engagement opportunities provided by INFORMS societies, sections and chapters, help members stay current, share experiences, and broaden work-related and personal horizons. Societies and sections cover a wide breadth of methodologies (e.g., analytics, data mining, optimization) and industry segments (e.g., healthcare, transportation, computing).
Advocacy and Outreach – Working with elected and non-elected government officials, stakeholders, policy influencers, and the media, INFORMS is engaged in a dedicated effort to raise awareness and interest in the application of operations research and analytics and how that serves the public interest in policymaking, governmental operations, and returns on research investment in these fields.

The Executive Director will work collaboratively with the Board of Directors, staff, and key external stakeholders (e.g., volunteers, industry executives, peer organization leadership) to build upon the organization’s rich legacy and address the evolving needs of the operations research and analytics professional communities. S/he will provide inspirational, strategic leadership, and effective management of this $14M organization with more than 50 staff and hundreds of volunteers. The Executive Director will ensure that INFORMS provides a robust and relevant value proposition and fosters a collaborative culture of member engagement, innovation, education, and service.
Specifically, the Executive Director is responsible for the following:
Strategic Direction. Develops and implements a comprehensive strategic plan in conjunction with the Board, ensuring the organization continues to adapt and grow in response to changes in the business and member engagement models of professional societies. Provides leadership in achieving the vision and mission of the organization and ensures alignment with financial and operational goals.
Board Relations. Builds and maintains strong, collaborative, and transparent relationships with the Board of Directors. Provides regular feedback and reports to keep them appraised of progress and success in meeting key targets of strategic and operational plans.
Staff Leadership. Provides effective leadership of a professional staff who demonstrate a commitment to excellent member service and delivery of cutting-edge programs and events. Sets a clear vision for goals and expectations, while encouraging an atmosphere that promotes collaboration and teamwork to support the mission and programs of the organization.
External Relationships. Enhances INFORMS’ visibility by representing the organization to the operations research and analytics communities and beyond. Develops strong working relationships with a wide-range of constituencies, in the public and private sectors, to build partnerships and coalitions consistent with INFORMS’ overall mission.
Enhancing Membership Base and Value to Members. Provides leadership to ensure a clear understanding of evolving market demands to deliver relevant conferences and meetings, scholarly journals, and other services and programs that drive member value. Develops targeted programs to attract and retain new members. Builds upon current revenue sources and identifies new value-added services/products.
Operational Oversight. Develops and administers an annual operating budget, exercising fiscal discipline over the investment of the organization’s resources, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information, internal controls, and reporting systems. Ensures that the organization’s governance structures, policies, and procedures are effective and compliant with all legal requirements.
Development. Engage with members, staff and other stakeholders to find new or enhanced opportunities to address member and professional needs, programs, strategy, outreach and meeting opportunities.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
INFORMS seeks candidates of high ethical integrity, global mindset, and outstanding leadership experience to advance the organization’s mission. The Executive Director will serve as a spokesperson for the organization before diverse audiences and must possess strong executive gravitas, essential for garnering the credibility and trust of members, key stakeholders, and the broader operations research and analytics communities.
Specific experience and qualifications will include:
Ability to be a strong advocate for operations research and analytics both internally to the membership and externally to industry leaders, university stakeholders, and government officials
Strong analytic skills key to monitoring industry trends in a world of rapid advancement and adoption of new digital solutions, such as artificial intelligence.
Success in effectively partnering with a volunteer Board and leading the development and execution of a strategic plan in conjunction with the Board of Directors and staff.
Results-oriented with strong business acumen, a history of success in financial management and business growth. Track record of managing change, identifying and implementing new initiatives and programs, and sunsetting programs.
Provides proactive leadership, guidance and direction for staff and business operations. Responsible for establishing and executing effective and auditable staff processes and operations including consistent performance planning and evaluation, salary and benefits administration, and recruiting. Develops a collaborative work environment that fosters excellence, integrity, accountability, teamwork, and cooperation.
Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills, key to forging and sustaining relationships with the Board, committees, communities, members, staff, and other key stakeholders.
Experience with compliance, governance, bylaws, policies, procedures, and all laws and regulations to safeguard the organization’s assets and standing.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally for the role.
