The Director of Education and Professional Development is a Senior Management position and works collaboratively with the Senior Management Team and staff to develop and implement strategies for addressing the professional needs of the Society’s members. The Director plays an important role in the continued growth and development of the Society both in terms of mission and economic health.
What You’ll Own (Responsibilities)
Core responsibilities include:
Directing, managing, and providing strategic oversight of all aspects of the Society’s professional development activities for members including CME and non-CME courses and enduring education;
Ensuring compliance with ACCME requirements, maintaining accreditation, and seeking approval with commendation from the ACCME;
Leading the growth, development, and performance of the education staff team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of CME and non-CME initiatives and programs.
Developing strategies to grow educational programming, revenue, and grants and sponsorships, with a focus on growth and success in online learning and education via the SVS learning management system.
Specific objectives of this position include:
Shape strategy for professional development programs with clearly articulated goals, objectives and protocols that define and assess success
Direct the effective and efficient planning, development, implementation and evaluation of educational programs and activities
Lead the research, design and implementation of the professional development program, including educational business/programmatic opportunities; plan, develop, manage, and monitor budgets for all educational programs
Oversee modifications to current programs that reflect new trends, opportunities, and challenges in the general educational landscape and specifically in the medical education setting
Develop and implement the Society’s strategic professional development goals with input and oversight from executive staff and volunteer leadership
Work collaboratively with the Education Council in setting strategic direction for development of all continuing professional development activities of the Society, including CME, non-CME, live meetings, and online/digital products
Lead curriculum development, program design, research and evaluation of the society’s educational program
Develop opportunities for corporate sponsorships and grants; develop related programming to ensure compliance with reporting requirements
Direct activities to assure compliance with accreditation (ACCME) criteria, standards and policies to maintain to the standards of accreditation with commendation; oversee development and maintenance of all necessary documentation, including policy and procedure manuals, to meet accreditation, funding, and other reporting requirements
Work with executive staff team to effectively manage resources and generation of revenues that enable the Society to operate (including budgets and reporting)
Develop and monitor Education budgets
Work collaboratively with other Senior Staff team members in marketing, communications, membership, IT, and finance during resource and product development process to assess member needs, program viability and development of successful business models to support educational goals
Participate as a member of the Senior staff team, contributing to development of long-term strategy and annual organizational goals
Provide leadership and direction to professional development team through establishing priorities and setting performance expectations
Represent the Society to related external organizations; establish partnerships with others to develop content and/or deliver content as appropriate
Work with educational consultants and IT vendors to direct the strategic planning, RFP development, and creation of online education initiatives
Form and nurture strategic partnerships with internal and external partners, physician leadership, committees, and councils to expand the educational program and support the mission of the organization
Manage, and direct the management of, multiple Education department programs and projects through concept development, content development, writing, physician review, medical editing, dissemination, and promotion including VAM, CME courses, non-CME courses, online programs, and self-assessment programs such as VESAP
Lead strategic research, including evaluation, outcomes, and needs assessment to ensure that curriculum, programming, and evaluation are aligned with best practices in education
Design and develop educational programming for residents and medical students
Experience & Education Requirements:
Master’s Degree in education, health care related field, social sciences, or business required; Specialty certificate/training in continuing education desirable.
Minimum of six-eight years progressive experience in medical education environment, either with a healthcare association or other medical education provider with experience contributing to departmental or organizational strategy; minimum of five years staff management experience.
In depth knowledge of ACCME and AMA criteria and requirements.
Demonstrated understanding of MOC requirements for physicians and experience developing programs to meet those requirements.
Significant experience in the development and delivery of education and professional development products utilizing multiple modalities and delivery systems including live major conferences and courses, distance learning and online education
Experience working effectively with committee (physician) leadership to provide strategic direction for professional activities
Working knowledge of abstract submission software and integration with a content management system and other e-delivery products (i.e. mobile app)
Professional membership and active engagement in organizations supporting the professional growth of education professionals i.e. ACME, IACME, ASAE, AAMSE, CMSS

Ability to interface with staff, Board of Directors, and external relationships in a professional manner
Travel required 3-4 times a year minimally
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Physical Requirements & Environment
Typical office setting with routine sitting and occasional standing. Routine use of basic office equipment and computer. Frequent travel in support of Regional meetings is required. Routine evening and/or weekend work maybe required based on business needs.
