The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), a non-profit, 501(c)(3) individual membership organization with a mission to promote the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals, and materials, is seeking candidates for the position of Controller. The Controller is responsible for all aspects of financial operations, including financial management, accounting, reporting and forecasting, budgeting, financial analysis and recommendations, and financial/accounting policies and procedures. The Controller provides support for financial operational strategies by forecasting cash requirements, identifying monetary resources and cash management. The Controller reports to the Deputy Executive Director and supervises and is supported by the Accounting and Human Resources Specialist.
Headquartered in McCandless, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, TMS is operating in compliance with state recommendations via a remote work environment, and the interview process will be conducted remotely. When in-person office operations resume, TMS will continue with telework-friendly operations.
Education & Experience
Bachelors Degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field
Active Certified Public Accountant certification, preferred
Ten years of progressive accounting experience, with at least five years in a management role, previous experience working in a 501c(3) organization preferred
Strong proficiency with computerized accounting systems (Great Plains preferred)
Proficiency with basic computer software (i.e., Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)

Responsibilities
Lead the development and implementation of the annual budget and three-year budget plan and projection consistent with the Society’s financial management policies and practices. Engage the management staff to align financial management with short- and long-term financial planning and projections. Make financial recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, inclusive of Operating Reserves, Operational Fund investments, TMS Foundation investments, and Retirement Plan investments.
Manage the financial accounting and reporting for TMS and the TMS Foundation inclusive of performance of day-to-day accounting functions; complete the month-end financial close including hands-on performance of closing entries as well as ledger reconciliations; cash flow management; development, review and enforcement of financial and accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls; and timely preparation and analysis of monthly financial statements and financial forecasts.
Ensure that the society’s financial practices and financial statements conform to generally accepted accounting principles and that the society is in compliance with federal, state, and local reporting requirements.
Develop and produce a monthly financial reporting package inclusive of performance metrics and dashboards; develop and manage effective communication and planning systems and processes with all other departments and the Financial Planning Committee.
Develop and maintain a reliable short- and long-term cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes a minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs. Provide regular cash flow forecasts.
Collaborate on operational issues, develop solutions, and provide business guidance and insight through financial reporting
Ensure that all policies and procedures within area of responsibility are updated and documented.
Assure that the financial aspects of employee administration and benefits programs (salary administration, timekeeping, retirement, health care, etc.) are conducted and reported in a manner that complies with all relevant laws, are ethically responsible, and reflect best-practices association management.
Manage the year-end close through the completion of annual audited financial statements and preparation of tax forms and filings. Serve as the principal liaison with the external auditors and Audit Committee. Coordinate and lead the external audit process.
Perform ad hoc analysis and other duties as assigned.
Position includes duties that may require travel.
